Eye Disease
The prolonged and constant viewing of computer monitor screens has caused visual disturbances characterized by difficulty focusing, eye strain, headaches and worsening of existing sight impairment. The eye specialist can diagnose and treat these conditions by conducting an eye exam and gathering a complete patient history.
Hand and Wrist Disease
The multiple repetitive movements used to hit the keyboard have caused hand and wrist strains, fatigue, cramps and even carpal tunnel syndrome. Some of these conditions may require medical or surgical treatment. Ergonomics evaluates individuals at their work stations to determine which body positions and equipment can prevent such problems.
Internet Depression
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have found that people who spend even a few hours on the Internet experience higher levels of depression and loneliness. The more time spent on the Internet, the worse the related depression became. The population studied for the two-year period were normal adults and their families. The study, called HomeNet, suggests that the computer may be no healthier than its popular rival, television. Questions about virtual communication and the disembodied relationships formed in cyberspace are raising concerns.
I recommend that people use the new technology as a tool rather than a lifestyle. It is especially important to monitor children’s computer usage and openly discuss possible overuse. These simple rules allow us to optimize the benefits of this wonderful technology while minimizing any detrimental physical and psychological side effects.
